What is a gastronorm pan?

Gastronorm is a standard sizing system for food pans, so pans of the same size, such as 1/3 or 1/6, fit the same bain-maries, prep fridges, ovens and display units. A full 1/1 pan measures 530 x 325mm, and the fractions divide it into smaller pans.
